The college was named after Mr Flavius Mareka, a prominent figure in educational, cultural and political circles. He lived in Kroonstad and passed away in 1965.

Goldfields TVET College is one of the 50 public Technical and Vocational Education and Training colleges in South Africa.

The college offers National Certificate Vocational programmes, Report 191 NATED programmes, occupational qualifications, learnerships and skills programmes.

Students who have completed at least Grade 9 may apply for selected programmes. Grade 12 learners who do not meet university entry requirements may also continue their studies through the college.
